My Mother recently passed away. She and I had worked to make sure that all arrangements for her burial were arranged and paid for. She passed away in McKinney, TX and her body needed to be transported to Amarillo,TX. My sister-in-law, Cindy Whitlow, worked with a Funeral Home in the area to arrange for the body to be picked up and carried to Amarillo. They informed us that we would have to work with Memorial Park Funeral Home in Amarillo since they were in the Dignity network. We were not pleased. Four years ago when my Father died we avoided working with them on the advice of friends who had not been satisfied with their work. As it turned out there was good reason.
When we arrived to view my Mother’s body in preparation for the visitation, around 11:00 AM, we were very disappointed.

The casket was quite unattractive and the liner was white instead of pink.
My Mother looked like a toad. Her lips flat. The folds of her neck all bunched. She had no chin! I have been to countless funerals and understand that often the person doesn’t look natural but this was bad.
There was make-up in her hair and on the white pillow next to her, in more than one spot! We were told this had been done by the General Manager Jarod Crowell.
The stand that the casket was resting on had no skirt. It was chipped and dusty.
The tissue boxes that were in the pews of the room were all, every one, crushed. There were several empty and one had used tissues stuffed in it.

When we mentioned this to the staff they said they would inform Suzanne Leal, the director assigned to us. We waited at least an hour before she finally arrived. When we asked about the casket she told us that the one my Mother had ordered was no longer available and this one was the replacement. The liner only came in white and if we wanted a casket with a pink liner we would have to pay $2200 more. We asked her if she could at least come up with a pink pillow and she said she would see what they had in the storeroom. She asked us to give her 30 minutes and she would do what she could.
We we returned, we found the pillow and the throw had been replaced with pink. They had done all that could be done, they claimed, with the lips and make-up. We then asked about the stand the casket was on and she said we would have to wait for the general manager since he was the only one able to authorize a change in the stand. She had to leave again, saying she must go to relieve him at a service, so he could come help us. After waiting quite a while, we finally asked how long and were told he would not be back until 4:30 or later. The visitation began at 6:00. We showed a woman on the staff the stand and the tissue boxes and asked that the throw be changed back to white and then left.
When we returned for the visitation, the stand had been skirted, the throw and tissue boxes replaced.

The services were on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. On the following Monday I had planned to call the funeral home to ask where the guest book, flower cards, thank you notes and personal items were, since I had not been contacted. On Monday morning, I got a call from the secretary of the church where the service was held to say that the funeral home had left a bag there containing all of these items. We appreciated the notice and went to pick them up.

I would describe the directors of Memorial Park Funeral Home charged with the care of my Mother as unprofessional, uncaring, sloppy, rude, taking no pride in their work.
I will spread the word that no one should use their services.

Every year on Memorial Day weekend my husband and I drive from Longview to visit family, friends and my father's grave. Every year the cemetery fails to put a flag on my father's grave honoring his service. I always politely go ask them to please put out a flag for my dad. He served 2 tours in Vietnam. This year my mother went out on Sunday. She went ahead and brought it to their attention so that when I came out on Monday I would find a flag on his grave and all would be well. My husband and I went out on Monday morning there was still no flag. I politely went in and wrote down my father's name and plot so they could place a flag for him. The director assured me they would take one out right away and was very appologentic. Four hours later my mother and aunt returned make sure the flag had been placed before my grandmother went out and noticed that he had been forgotten yet another year. There was still no flag. When she went to ask them again to place one they handed it to her to go back and put out. I understand people make mistakes, although my father's head stone has a US Marine Corps seal on it, but I don't appreciate being pacified just until I leave and then no one makes the effort to correct the problem. I realize to some this is no big deal, but after several years of the same lies "We will take care of it", it's a big deal to me. My father lived as once a Marine always a Marine it defined who he was. I will do all I can to continue to honor my father even all of these years after his death.
